Unidentified Flying Objects and Extraterrestrial Life
UFOs are cemented in media. Everyone knows about the classic flying saucer with little green men inside. This archetype goes back to several different sightings in history. My favorite UFO sighting is one that's a little unconventional. in 1967, a man in Manitoba Canada was at Falcon Lake when a small metal aircraft shot a laser at him through a vent. The laser left a burn mark which was later studied, leaving this as Canada's most well documented UFO sighting, even over 50 years later.
My personal favorite alien sighting is that of the Flatwoods monster (pictured on this website's home page). In 1952, two brothers in Braxton County, West Virginia, saw a bright object cross the sky and land in their neighbor's property. Upon gathering family and investigating the UFO, the people were met with a tall metallic figure with a red face surrounded by a pointed hood-like shape. The figure made a hissing sound and started gliding towards the group, which caused them to scream and run away. Despite the terrifying circumstances, the flatwoods monster is currently regarded in an endearing manner and even has a museum dedicated to it in Braxton County, the same place it was first spotted. My introduction to this creature is something that kickstarted my interest in the oddities of the universe. In the videogame, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (2000) for the Nintendo 64, there is a quest that involves defending a farm from aliens that look very similar to the description and artist interpretations of the flatwoods monster. Below is a video of the gameplay segment.
